Our Story...
Having run my own business for over 20 years, I have seen recessions come and go, the strong survive and grow stronger, while the weak struggle or die. In 2002 I decided to give up the offices and work from home, which was a difficult decision to make, but once made was easy to do.
The current recession, and it is predicted that it will go on for another three years, has made me realise how vulnerable we are if we have all our eggs in one basket. All small businesses are at the mercy of events that are totally outside our control. In November 2009 I found Wikaniko an opportunity that seemed to encompass everything good about being eco friendly and was a business that I could run alongside our existing business, without it impacting upon it, simply by finding a little time every day to do something completely different.
When events dictated that we review our business and we took the decision to work from home we decided that we’d like to have a complete change of scenery and lifestyle so we bought a little cottage in need of renovation sat in 6 acres in a clearing in the Forest of Dean.
So here we are, living the good life - well trying to - but we still have a lot of work to do and we need an additional income to help us achieve our goals. However it is important that anything we do sits alongside our new lifestyle and our desire to have a greener way of life.
My partner Denise has - for some time - been taking climate change and carbon footprints quite seriously. Initially I was sceptical but she persuaded me that even small changes to our lifestyle and shopping habits can make a difference. Because of that we have been looking carefully at the products we use for cleaning ourselves, our house and our five dogs! We’ve looked at the amount of electricity we use, how we can recycle more and we now have several compost bins. When we were introduced to Wikaniko I was delighted to discover that we’d found a company that not only has the products but also an ethical working practice that ticks all the boxes for us.
We predict that in 2010 this will, provide us with a residual income that eases the pressure of cash flow from our prime business and allows us the freedom of choosing who we work with.
